Student 1

Who’s allowed to go to the doctor?

Anybody, if they have enough money. Like, you can’t pay for the doctor if you don’t have enough money.

So what happens to those people?

They have to get health care somehow, some other way.

Who do you think should be able to see the doctor?

Anybody because if the President raises taxes and lose a lot of their money, then they can’t pay for healthcare and wipe out a lot of people or something like that.

What would you do if one of your friends got sick and they couldn’t see a doctor?

Lend them money to let them.

How much do you think it costs to see a doctor? Say you cut your knee and you had to get seven stitches.

I don’t know, like $300, maybe.

What’s your favorite food?

Probably steamed broccoli.

Where does steamed broccoli come from?

I don’t know. It comes from broccoli and then you steam it with a pot.

So have you ever been to a farm?

Yeah, but I didn’t see the animals.

Can you describe to me what a farm looks like?

Well, I’m not sure if it was a farm, but it was near a farm where my grandmother grew up. It had, like, gravel for their driveway, well I’m not sure if it actually was a farm. The gravel driveway, big wooden house, downstairs under the basement where we slept. They had an upstairs.

How do fruit and vegetables grow? How do apples grow?

Apples, they grow on trees. Peaches and pears share the same, oranges, too. They all grow on trees.

Do you know why roosters crow in the morning?

To wake up the animals.

Where does milk come from?

Cows.

Do you know what cows eat?

Grass.

Where do they eat the grass?

Well, that depends on where they’re born, or where they’re kept. If they’re kept in a large, grassy area, practically anywhere. If they’re kept in an area with only a little bit of grass, but mostly just dusty or stuff or dirt, then they come to one place to get the grass.

Are farms important for people that live around here?

Not really, because we catch fish and people can grown fruits on their own, but the vegetables and bread, they rely on wheat and farming. So it’s kind of, kind of not. I don’t know.

Does food help you stay healthy?

Some types. like, McDonald’s is bad for you, but broccoli, vegetables and most fruits are good for you.

What’s your favorite farm animal?

The chicken. Little tiny chicken.

Why do you like the chickens?

Because they’re tiny. They’re like tiny pigeons. I mean, big pigeons, not tiny pigeons.

Where do farm animals, like cows, pigs and chickens, spend most of their day?

In that grassy area on the field. The pigs would spend most of their time in the mud, unless there was no mud, that would be kind of sad for the piggies.

Do you think it is important for farm animals to be happy?

Not very much. For the pig all you need was water and dirt, for the cow you just need to plant some grass and than it’ll keep on growing, if you water it.

Do you know what organic means?

Most stuff that is good for you usually, like organic milk would be. Well, we’re taking some of the fat out, but leaving it in for the little kids, or people who want that type. But, we’re going to keep fat free in case people want to keep their weight or lose some.

Would you like to be a farmer?

No. Because there’s not very much space for a farm around here, because there’s not much dirt, there’s mostly houses, roads, schools, buildings. So there’s not much space to, and I want to keep near my family, like near my father, my grandparents.

Do you know what war is?

Yeah, we send out people with guns and tanks, big cars with guns on top of them, and we shoot at people, kill people, a lot of people die.

What do you think about that?

It’s bad.

Why do people fight?

Sometimes it’s to spread their country, to take over land, sometimes it’s just for laws, or to take other people they don’t think are the right people away.

What do soldiers do in wars?

They shoot at people, drive the tanks, die a lot, and that’s mostly it.

What happens to people in wars?

They die. Unless they’re really good.

Student 2

Who do you think should be able to go to the doctor?

Any people if you’re sick or, like, if you work there for your dog, um, –

How much does it cost to see the doctor?

$20, maybe?

What’s your favorite food?

I don’t really have a favorite one, but the one I like is pizza and apple pie.

Where does it come from?

The apple pie, I like my grandma’s apple pie, [unintelligible] and just, like, from a pizza place, I guess.

Where do the ingredients come from?

Well, apple pie, apple trees, or like apple orchards. And pizza, I don’t really know what’s in pizza. I don’t really know where you get cheese, except the grocery store.

Why do roosters crow in the morning?

Well, I don’t really know, but maybe to wake up all the people on the farm and all the hens and those guys.

Where does milk come from?

Cows.

What do cows eat?

Eat grass.

Where do cows live?

Sometimes on a farm, or like if this had a big huge fence around the school right there, maybe it could be where cows live?

What’s your favorite farm animal?

Probably a farm dog or a farm puppy. Because I really like dogs, because [unintelligible] cute and playful.

Do you know what a war is?

Yeah, it’s like where one state fights another state.

What do you think about war?

I think it shouldn’t happen unless there’s, like if one country drops a bomb on another country for no reason, I’m not really sure war should happen or not.

Why are there wars?

Because one state gets mad at another state, but it’s one person from this state says, they hate this state and so that person shoots another person from that state that says I hate that state, and then the other state shoots another person. Then, a bunch of people are shooting other people, so that’s a war.

Student 3

Who do you think should be able to see the doctor?

A person who knows how to behave in a hospital.

Do you think that anybody should be able to see a doctor?

Pasta and hot dogs.

Where do they come from?

Pasta comes from bread and hot dogs come from pigs.

Where do pigs live?

Usually in the farm or maybe in a field.

Why do roosters crow in the morning?

To wake up all the little siblings.

Where does milk come from?

Cows, sheep or goats.

And what do cows eat?

Usually grass.

And where do they eat the grass?

Fields. Big, big fields.

Are farms important for people who live around here?

Yes, because they actually make the food. They bring the animals to the slaughterhouse.

What’s your favorite farm animal?

Maybe the sheep, since they produce the most stuff, like wool and milk.

Where do farm animals, like cows, pigs, chickens and sheep, spend most of their days?

Usually, the pigs are in their pen, the sheep are in their fields and the cows are in the fields.

Do you think it’s important for farm animals to have happy lives on the farms?

Yes, because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t be good to eat.

Would you like to be a farmer?

Maybe someday. Because I can produce good food for your family and other people.

Can you tell me what a war is?

It’s when two countries don’t have to war about one thing. A war is made of sometimes years and thousands of battles.

What do you think about war?

Not that friendly and not that fun to be in.

Student 4

Who can go see a doctor if they get sick?

No, I don’t know.

Tomato sauce?

Yeah.

Where do tomatoes come from?

The store?

Have you ever been to a farm?

Nuh-huh.

Do you know what a farm looks like?

Yes. It has this, kind of, big barn and it’s red and white outlining and there’s hay, there’s a horse, there is a chicken, and a turkey, probably.

Where does milk come from?

Cows.

Where do cows live?

Barn.

Are farms important for people that live around here?

Uh, not really.

What’s your favorite farm animal?

Horse.

Yeah, why?

I don’t know. Because I really want one for Christmas.

Where do farm animals, like cows and pigs and chickens, spend their day?

In the farm.

Let’s see, do you know what organic means?

Nuh-huh.

Would you like to be a farmer?

Yeah.

Why?

I don’t know, because it’s fun. You get to get messy.

You like to get messy?

Yeah. Me and my sister do mud pies, so it’s kind of fun.

Can you tell me what a war is?

Yeah, it’s when people fight to fight and fight to fight. And all they do is fight.

I like Thai food, mango.

Where does mango come from?

I think it’s a tropical fruit.

Do you know what a farm looks like?

How do fruits and vegetables grow?

Sometimes they’ll grow in the ground, like potatoes, you have to dig them up, and sometimes they grow on trees.

Why do roosters crow in the morning?

I’m not sure.

Where does milk come from?

Cows. Cows utters.

What do cows eat?

Grass.

And where do they eat that grass?

Wherever the farm is, wherever they’re kept. I have a lot of cows where I live.

What’s your favorite farm animal?

Do you know what organic means?

Yeah. It’s kind of hard to explain. It’s not fake, yeah, basically.

Would you like to be a farmer?

Yeah.

Why is that?

I don’t know, I just think it’d be kind of fun. It would be hard work, but I think it’d also be fun.

Can you tell me what a war is?

It’s where two different groups of people are fighting.

What do you think about war and fighting?

It’s bad. Because people die and stuff, and sometimes it doesn’t even make sense, they could just talk it over.

Why are there wars?

Because one group of people wants this sometimes and then the other group wants a different thing, or one groups wants something that the other group has, or something like that.

Student 6

Who in the world is able to go see the doctor if they get sick?

Anybody.

Sometimes people don’t have enough money and can’t see the doctor; do you think that’s fair?

No. Because other people who have money can and other people who don’t, can’t. Because if they’re sick and they don’t have any money, then they’re going to get worse if they don’t go to the doctor.

If you had a friend that got sick and they couldn’t see the doctor, would you be upset?

I would be pretty sad.

What if your mom or dad got sick and they couldn’t see a doctor?

I would help them feel better.

Why do roosters crow in the morning?

To wake people up.

Where does milk come from?

Cows.

What do cows eat?

Grass.

Where do they eat it?

From the dirt.

Are farms important for people who live around here?

Because it’s disgusting and really smelly and flies on it. Really weird.

Can you tell me what a war is?

A war is when people fight and shoot, you know, and they have swords and guns and a hundred, like, a hundred marines and bad guys, they come into, they come to a big place, the Army and the Marines fight. And they kill people, a lot of people died, like, maybe all the people in the Marines, died, like, in the Civil War. Like that.

Student 11

Who can go see a doctor when they get sick?

People who have broken legs and people who are sick and some people who have a bad eye or something. Just like when I was at the hoedown up here, Mariah, my sister, she went and she had the same [teacher] in kindergarten.

And she was shooting this paper rocket and I was looking up, and the pointy sharp of that paper rocket hit my eye and I had to go to the hospital.

Did they take good care of you?

Yes. I had to put drops in my eyes before, but now I don’t.

There’s a lot of people who can’t go to the doctor because they don’t have enough money. Do you think that’s fair?

Where does milk come from?

Cows and goats.

What do cows eat?

The nurse.

What about you? Should you be able to go see the doctor?

Yeah.

Do you think there’s anybody that can’t go see the doctor?

People who don’t pay, they don’t have any money, that means they can’t go in there. That’s it. That’s all I know.

Is that fair?

No. Because if they’re sick, if they’re not sick, they can’t go there. Because if you’re sick you have to go there or, you know, my babysitter broke her finger, she broke her bone, and she had to stay in the doctor for one day.

Do you think that was expensive?

I don’t know. But we got to see her.

What does a farm look like?

A person who has a farm hat on and who has chicken food.

Why do roosters crow in the morning?

Because they’re excited to see people.

Where does milk come from?

Cows.

What do cows eat?

Grass.

Are farms important for people who live around here?

Yeah. Because sometimes they need food from the animals that live in the farm. Like chickens, they need eggs, and sometimes they need milk and they put them into cartons and then they put them in the stores.

What’s your favorite farm animal?

I’ll tell you my sister’s favorite. Hers is — I’ll make you guess it: [oink oink]

Yeah.

Why?

Because — I don’t know, actually.

Have you ever heard the word “organic”?

Yeah.

What’s it mean? Is it a good thing?

Yeah. That means it’s good for you and not poison. Like organic milk. My mom and dad only buy organic things, but sometimes my babysitter makes me eat high fructose corn syrup. That’s really bad for you. You could die, you could.

So, you don’t like high fructose corn syrup?

No.

Why organic is so good for you?

Because it will keep you healthy.

Can you tell me why people fight?

Because sometimes they want to go somewhere and other people don’t, and then they start fighting.
